This mockumentary is perhaps only shadowed by one-other; This Is Spinal Tap. But because it’s technically a film, The Office gets to be crowned the best mockumentary on television. Ricky Gervais made his arrogant and pompous character, David Brent, a much loved and hated household name, with the antics of the Slough office often used as a comparison to our own working environments. Winner of numerous awards including two Golden Globes, The Office’s understated, sarcastic and witty premise deserves to be in this list.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
Monty Python’s Flying Circus was revolutionary in the world of comedy. Their approach to humour was seen by many as absurd, with only a handful of people at the time realising the genius of this comedy group. It didn’t take long, however, for people to catch on and now almost everyone agrees that the Monty Python sketches and films changed the way the world looks at comedy.
The Simpsons
Every week for two decades, this panel-based news show has brought us the latest headlines with a no-nonsense twist. The stars of the show are always Paul Merton and Ian Hislop who have been panel captains from the start, but every week new guests and guest hosts are brought in to spice the show up, often resulting in highly controversial jokes about celebrities and politicians, some of whom also appear on the show.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Written by and starring comedy genius, Ricky Gervais, this mockumentary has become a national institution. Broadcast in many countries around the world and even adapted into an American version starring Steve Carrell, The Office’s understated script and acting hilariously illustrates the working relationships between colleagues in an office environment. The programme clearly has universal appeal as it’s won two Golden Globe awards.
The Simpsons
The Simpsons may be a cartoon, but it’s certainly not just for children. The cartoon is very clever in poking fun at and highlighting our (or more precisely, American) behaviours and attitudes towards politics, family, friends, religion and work. Today, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie and many other of the cast are household names.
