Trophies As Prize Of Success And Symbol Of Position
Posted in Marketing on September 19th, 2010 by Mary Finch – Be the first to commentTrophy was actually derived from a Greek word. “Tropaion” came from the verb “trope,” meaning “to rout.” Back in ancient times in Greece, people used to produce trophies on the battlefields of successful battles. Their bases were inscribed with the particulars of the battle, along with a dedication to the god that they believed assisted them win the battle. To destroy these tributes to the gods, then, was viewed as a sacrilege.
As for the Romans during ancient times, trophies were kept close to homes. They were exceedingly big and were frequently placed on pillars and arches rather than being a homage to the victors and the gods on the battlefield.
Not much is known about its history during the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, it is believed that they were used as awards for sporting events in the late 1600s. The usual shapes used then were silver chalices and two-handled sterling loving cups.
Perhaps the supreme representation of triumph is a trophy. The usual setting is the bigger the trophy, the highest the achievement. From the grandest of competitions, such as major sports events, to the humblest of matches, like a local elementary school’s Spelling Bee contest, trophies are everywhere.
Nowadays, trophies come in various kinds and sizes. Although cups and chalices are still prevalent, they now come in almost every shape imaginable, such as stars, human forms, abstract, and animal forms.
For mass production, materials used nowadays include steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic. They are much less costly and can be mass produced.
Trophies aren’t just awarded during sports competitions. They are also presented in acknowledgment of individual or group achievement. The Academy Awards, a famous Hollywood awards events, is a great example. Individual skills like acting, directing and producing, as well as group efforts, such as best film and cast, are acknowledged with a trophy shaped like a human being.
A trophy stands for victory and position, not only a prize for a specific accomplishment in sports, acting, discovery or other skills. Receiving one doesn’t just mean being able to defeat your adversaries in a game or being the established leader in your field of expertise. Being honored with a trophy means being part of the heritage that comes with it.
